Of all his final projects, the THIS IS IT concert series at the O2 Arena in London was poised to make the biggest splash.  Indeed, in some ways the statement was already made before Jackson even began rehearsing for the show.  When he announced the concerts in London to a crowd of hysterical fans, networks around the world, including BBC and CNN, gave it more than an hour of live coverage.  It was impossible to think of another artist who could command that kind of attention by simply announcing concert dates.  By the next day, more than 1.6 million people had signed up on Jackson’s website to buy tickets.  Then came what AEG executive Randy Phillips described as “the most astonishing thing I have ever seen in my career in the entertainment business.”  After years out of the public spotlight and nearly a decade since being on stage, Jackson sold out ten, then thirty, then fifty dates at the O2 Arena.  Demand was so high, the website froze and crashed repeatedly.  “Tickets sold at a rate of 11 per second, 657 per minute and nearly 40,000 an hour,” said concert organizers, who called it the fastest-selling show in history.  “We often talk about unprecedented demand, but this week we have witnessed a live entertainment phenomenon,” said Ticketmaster’s managing director.  “this was undoubtly the busiest demand for tickets for an event which we have ever experienced.”never can say goodbye

It was an astonishing turn of events.  The media, which had wondered for days before “who beyond the most devoted fans, would pay $80 and upwards for a ticket.” were shocked.  Jackson had just pulled off the biggest one-city-gig ever at the hottest new arena in the world.  Experts predicted he could generate close to one billion pounds for the London economy.  His album sales were up more than two hundred percent.  “Michael Jackson has floored the critics,” wrote the Times’ Veronica Schmidt.  Indeed, at fifty years old, he was set to make history again.  Even his peers were amazed and excited to see the shows.  “TO SELL OUT LIKE THAT IS A TESTAMENT TO TALENT,” SAID COLDPLAY’S CHRIS MARTIN.  “IT IS JUST AMAZING TO SELL OUT 50 SHOWS IN ONE CITY IN A BIG ARENA.  IT’S THE BIGGEST COMEBACK SINCE LAZARUS.” Joseph Vogel  MAN IN THE MUSIC  2011

2009  June 25  sent shock waves around the world from America to Africa, Europe to Asia-prominent websites crashed.  AOL reported never seeing anything like it.  The global response was simply without parallel.  On TV and online an astounding one billion people watched Michael’s Memorial Service…more than Presley or Kennedy or Princess Diana.  The week following his death, 9 out of 10 positions on Billboard were Michael’s.  His album Number One stayed at #1 for six weeks.  Before his death, no artist had ever sold one million downloads in a week.  Michael sold 6 million.  Michael’s songs and albums reached #1 in every country around the planet.  By the end of 2009, Michael had sold more than 8 million albums in the US and 30 million around the world, not only being the best-selling artist of the year by a landslide, but also surpassing even his own stratospheric records with Thriller.  “THIS IS IT” BECAME THE BEST-SELLING MUSIC FILM OF ALL TIME.SENSUAL

The benchmarks you have just seen are but a part of that legacy of awards and accomplishments.  I have started with these…one day soon, I will add more.  When I do, I will concentrate on Michael’s massive number of HUMANITARIAN AWARDS.  Until then, I leave you with this…“I WANT PEOPLE TO HEAR OR WATCH SOMETHING I’VE DONE AND FEEL THAT I’VE GIVEN IT EVERYTHING…EVERY OUNCE OF BLOOD, SWEAT AND GOD-GIVEN TALENT I HAVE.  I FEEL I OWE AN AUDIENCE THAT COURTESY.”  MICHAEL JACKSONmy lover
