TRIUMPH AGAINST ALL ODDS Immersion into Smile

“That’s what makes greatness.  You have to have that tragedy, that pain to pull from.  That’s what makes a clown great.  You can see he’s hurting behind the masquerade.  He’s something else externally.  Chaplin did that so beautifully, smile of a lifetime better than anyone.  I can play off those moments, too.  I’ve been through the fire many times.”

How could you not admire his genius.  He was the king of pathos…he knew how to make you laugh and cry at the same time.  I relate to him.  I sometimes feel like I am him.”

Michael Jackson personified Kenji Miyazawa’s view of what defines the journey of artistic vision when he said,  “We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.”  If we believe that healing only comes when we experience our suffering to its fullest, then great art harvests life experiences to the full…and, powerful visions are created from great injustice.  During dark times, the eyebeauty again four begins to see. (Theodore Roethke)  Michael’s vision quest had even a higher purpose.  It wasn’t only for a personal cathartic moment that he created art.  The affirmations of SENSUAL MANMichael’s soul stretched to mankind…a self-discovery for all humanity, realizing that all roots of living, suffering and loving are connected, one to another.  Michael was here to prevent our “soul loss.”  (Julia Cameron), creating to show us our role of responsibility, to each other and the natural world.  His personal narrative, lived out on a world stage, each event held under the microscope for all to analyze, did not embrace revenge. “I am fascinated by the concept of revenge.  It’s something I can’t understand.  The idea of making someone pay for something they’ve done to you or that you imagine they’ve done to you is totally alien to me.”  (Moonwalk)  Michael’s truedangerous beauty voice came from his heart, his dreams from the power of a creative source, whispered by angels in the form of children, animals and the natural world.  He internalized not only his own personal pain and suffering, but, the pain and suffering of a world headed for destruction, knowing that our togetherness of support was pivotal for our healing.

“Michael Jackson was no ordinary man.  He was an artist in the highest form, and he was a gift.  He left us with an indelible imprint of love, hope, faith and acceptance.  He gave of himself like no other, and he left us with a promise of a better tomorrow.  I feel that Michael understood the real value of truth.  Whatever he was feeling or expressing within himself he openly shared unconditionally, hoping to inspire, and touch others.  This was Michael’s art in its purest form and it enabled him to live and continue to grow as the greatest artist of our time.”

Michael’s spirituality gave power to his affect on people.  His credibility lay in his choices when the flames licked at his feet…seemingly insurmountable roadblocks turned into potential and infinite possibilities.  Michael’s autobiography, told in the artistry of his music, his dance, his performance, represented the life stories of us all.  Raamayan Ananda describes it as a hero’s journey taking a power that is unimaginable…when the whole world is condemning you, to stand up even more strongly and fight for your truth, your place in the world…it is a rebellious act…a hero’s journey.

Joseph Vogel calls Michael’s HIS tory album a tragedy…saying like the best tragedies, eyes of loveits protagonist beats on, against the current, in perpetual resistance to fate.  I find Michael’s HIS tory album to be a masterpiece of brilliant outcry against injustice…understanding that if the heart is wounded, it must be healed.  Rather than ending with skepticism…a chronic atrophy and disease of the soul…Michael chooses SMILE.  A genius at pathos, Michael moves us with his pain and saves us with his love…affirming our humanity, acknowledging our individual power and inspiring our creativity as a collective energy for good.  Michael’s album arc imbues our emotions, uplifting our souls and leaving us to ponder solutions together.  “During the recording of SMILE, the orchestra had been listening to Michael childrenn in russiasing through their individual microphones.  When Michael walked out into the studio, every member of the fifty piece orchestra stood up and tapped their music stands with their bows, as loud as they could.  Jeremy Lubbock stood on the conductor’s podium and also applauded as loud as he could.  I was applauding by myself in the control room as loud as I could.”  Bruce Swedien

Michael Jackson’s music awakens our souls.   He speaks to our hearts, setting our inner beings free…free to make our own music.  There is a truth in Vincent Van Gogh’s words, “It is looking at things for a long time that ripens you and gives you a deeper understanding.”  We in this massive community share something that Michael felt, that we feel, and that cannot be adequately understood by those who have not been enlightened.  It is a feeling, a believing, a KNOWING.  We have internalized it.  Through the joy and sorrow, with a promise of another tomorrow…we SMILE, knowing “I WILL NEVER LET YOU PART, FOR YOU’RE ALWAYS IN MY HEART.

Michael Jackson

“His tory is Michael Jackson’s most personal album.  From the impassioned rage of SCREAM to the pained vulnerability of CHILDHOOD, the record was, in Jackson’s words, ‘a musical book.’  It encompassed all the turbulent emotions and struggles of the previous few years.  It was his journal, his canvas, his rebuttal.”

There is truth in the capacity for enthusiasm being a sign of a healthy spirit and heart.  Michael Jackson’s creative enthusiasm knew no limits, bursting into world attention withbe still my heart ten intention, purposing musical history.  With unparalleled work ethic, a peerless imagination, and his pioneering, legendary visions, Michael sought perfection and greatness with each and every project he did.  A voice that vigorously trained, Michael’s compositions offered a vehicle for sounds the ear had never heard before.  Quite simply, he maintained his vocal gifts and worked to make them even better. Michael’s HIS tory double album is among the most magnificent work I have ever heard from this massively talented artist.  I am not one to quantify and compare songs and albums, performance and designs.  When asked what is my favorite Michael art, I simply say that to choose one would be like choosing my favorite breath I’ve taken.  Truly, I love EVERYTHING.  I turn to the HIS tory album for diversity and boldness…an honesty and power that grabs me and doesn’t let go.  Michael angry outrosignites my fuse.  Michael lonely, searching, is somewhere beyond powerful to me.  I learn about sampling to drive home message.  I feel desperate when hearing Little Susie’s plight.  I fall in  love all over again with YOU ARE NOT ALONE.  I sing at the top of my lungs with Michael’s cries against social and media injustice, greed and lies.  And EARTH SONG is absolutely Michael’s magnum opus…the most brilliant work of artistry written to save a dying planet.  Rather than simply putting out a greatest hits album, Michael selected some of his Number Ones and then set about writing new material.  He never believed in doing the ordinary.  It wasn’t a part of who he was. Soundscapes require multiple listenings to begin to grasp all that is recorded…the earth song performancematerial is simply too rich to take in all at once.  Michael’s short films for the album show a genius at work.  Each is art incarnate…being so far from typical pop genre video.  One must take the time to study each…SCREAM, THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US (two separate short films done), STRANGER IN MOSCOW, CHILDHOOD, YOU ARE STUNNING SEVENNOT ALONE, COME TOGETHER, AND, EARTH SONG.  This art could come from no one else but Michael Jackson.

“Whatever one makes of the hoopla surrounding the album,  one can scarcely ignore its amazing production values and the skill with which truly vast musical resources have been brought to bear upon the project.  Where most popular music makes do with the sparse instrumentation of a working band fleshed out with a bit of synth, HIS tory brings together such renowned studio musicians and production talents as Slash, Steve Porcaro, Jimmy Jam, Nile Rodgers,  plus a full sixty piece symphony orchestra, several choirs including the Andrae Crouch Singers Choir, star vocalists such as sister Janet Jackson and Boyz II Men, and the arrangements of Quincy Jones and Jeremy Lubbock.  Indeed, the sheer richness of the instrumental and vocal scoring is probably HISTORY AGAINunprecedented in the entire realm of popular recording.”  Daniel Sweeney

And then, we come to the stage production of the History World Tour, with its 82 shows performed for 4,145,000 Fans, in 58 cities, 35 countries, on five continents, a duration of 404 days…the tour reaching 1,000,000 more fans than Michael’s Dangerous WorldHISTORY WORLD TOUR Tour.  Michael again brought THEATRE to the stage.  The sheer massiveness of staging, lighting, wearable art innovation, and set pieces which included a spaceship and a tank…INCREDIBLE.  And for the Ladies, let’s not forget the golden suit…Oh, Dear, where was I!  Oh, yes, THEATRE.  MICHAEL MADE HISTORY!earth song  With each world tour, Michael’s well-crafted, innovative approach to contemporary performance moved up a notch.  Far beyond other artists, Michael brought drama and theatre to audiences, using his storytelling artistry and his music to delight all the senses, appealing to all ages, colors, cultures.  Each stage progressively got bigger…the History stage gave Michael a great area to OWN IT.  A true artist owns his stage and MICHAEL JACKSON IS A TRUE ARTIST!  Michael believed in bringing his audiences every bit of blood, sweat and God-given talent he had in him.  HE DID THAT BLACK OR WHITE PERFORMANCEFOR 82 SHOWS.  Theatricality went to the 10th power during Michael’s performances of SCREAM, THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US, IN THE CLOSET, SMOOTH CRIMINAL, THRILLER, EARTH SONG AND HISTORY.   Billie Jean was magnificent along with all Michael’s other classics.  DANGEROUS brought theatre reminiscent of SMOOTH CRIMINAL…only, more so.  And then there is EARTH SONG…theatre and opera all in one.  STUNNING. For those who come to our MICHAEL MARATHONS, many who have never seen Michael in concert…to a person, marvel at the energy Michael gives…from INTRO TO OUTRO and everywhere in between.  The History World Tour also offers powerful messages for audiences to ponder long after they exit the stadium.  The tribute to each country hosting the tour is powerfully done as the show concludes and Michael’s massive sampling aired from the yana twosong History.  There is so much to see, to hear, to enjoy, to ponder! During this same time frame, Michael wrote, choreographed and performed/filmed GHOSTS, wrote and produced the BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR album and worked tirelessly on humanitarian efforts…and, he became a FATHER.DADDY ELEVEN HIS story captured the emotional turbulence of living.  It is art at its finest.  Performance Art in both short films and live stage shows showed Michael’s passionate commitment to his music and to the quality, professionalism, energy and perfection he gave his entire lifetime.

This week, I received two books.  I must admit, I thought long and hard before ordering either of them.  Much as Michael did, I am very careful about what I give my mind and resources to, having been burned all too many times when it comes to writers who claim to honor and respect Michael, and then, follow those words with brutal bashings.  My practice has always been to initially cruise through writings, noting areas that touchGORGEOUS TWENTY ONE my heart.  This didn’t take long.  REMEMBERING THE TIME offered little.  It’s purpose seemed to be about self-serving the authors and diminishing Michael.  Dedicated to Michael’s children, my prayer is that they never read it.  I ended late in the night, laying my head on the pillow and crying tears of regret.  I have often written, and will repeat, I know of no other human being who has had his life put under a microscope, picked apart and judged, judged, JUDGED.  My collection of research grows daily.  I have seen a pattern time and timedancer two again…writers saying how much they love Michael, how they cared about him…and then, tearing decisions, isolated incidents, apart.  When I began writing my blog, I made a promise to myself to let Michael do the talking.  It is HIS STORY, HIS LIFE.  “Don’t judge my choices until you understand my reasons.”  (Michael Jackson)  Two and a half years with a person does not offer explanation and insight to an ENTIRE life.  Thegorgeous nineteen authors would have had more credibility with me if they had stayed with the actual time spent with Michael and his children.  They did not. “To try to guess a person’s thinking process, or even to attempt to project further meaning to statements that a person has made in order to extract meaning, is dangerous.  In fact, it is an invasion of his privacy to the highest degree.”  I found that quote some days ago and I am sorry I do not have its author…but, its message rings true.

“Say YES to life, even though you know it will devour you…because among the obstacles and, to be sure, the cruelties of life, are signs that we are a primary spiritual adventure.”

Stephen Larsengorgeous eighteen

With a heavy heart, I moved onto MICHAEL JACKSON, INC. expecting it to bring me down once again.  Surprisingly, the author’s agenda was to factually represent Michael’s business acumen.  “I have avoided the use of press clippings and secondary adoable fourteensources as much as possible.”  (Zack O’Malley Greenburg)  I breathed more easily.  When reading a piece, I put a line through media-myth-making trash.  My pen was amazingly idle…not too much.  “Every time someone buys a copy of this book, a person in need will receive a free meal through  the United Nations’ World Food Programme.  Why?  Michael Jackson donated tens of millions of dollars to various charities over the God's suffering servantcourse of his life and 20 percent of his financial legacy to good causes.  I figured it would only be fitting to make a contribution from my author royalties.”  That gave validity with me.

At the heart of these two books is MONEY.  It is the theme.  When asked how important money was to him, Michael said, “I guess it gets things done…to fulfill some dreams you need to have financial backing.  However, I think everything starts with a thought, like if you plant a seed which then cultivates itself, everything comes out of that.  I never really thought about it when I was little, I always felt that I was compelled to do the things I did, I really did.”  Michael often said that money was the root of all evil.  The truth of that existed for Michael as he was forced tosexy four endure all who tried to lay claim to his fortune…”In 1995, it was easy to view the next track, ‘Money’ as a continuation of Jackson’s personal grievances.  Fortunately, years later it can simply be appreciated for what it is: an intricate sonic gem with an all-too-familiar message denouncing greed and materialism.”  (MAN IN THE MIRROR Joseph Vogel)

Michael led us by going first.  His was called upon to endure great tragedy and pain, and each time, the motives were driven by greed, a force so strong it clawed its way through a lifetime.  Each and every aspect of cruelty, both in life and in death, snarls not guiltyand rears its ugly head reaching for MONEY.

“Spirituality lies not in the power to heal others, to perform miracles, or to outstand the world with our wisdom, but to the ability to endure with right attitude whatever crosses we have to face in our daily lives and thus to rise above them.”

Sri Daya Natavindication two

Michael Jackson’s dreams and aspirations allowed the universe the pleasure of working with him and through him, evoking wonders of magic.  His life was an act of faith, tested time and time again.  He achieved so many dreams because he wanted them so badly, tmand, was willing to work tirelessly for them.  He began a LOVE REVOLUTION that grabs hold of hearts across this planet today…a lasting revolution in the shape of his FAN FAMILY.  Many writers have attempted to define Michael Jackson, some more successful than others.  But, the common weakness comes in the shape of guessing, attributing their agendas to his…taking one aspect of the multilayered, complicated life of a genius.  What Michael thought, said and did were all in harmony.  The lust for money on the part of those around him, on the part of those seeking their five minutes of fame today, stumbled into his acts of faith.  Living within the source and substance ofbeat it five his creativity was soul.

For Michael’s FAN FAMILY, our strength comes from his carving the path out ahead of us…his walking through fires and showing us how it is done.  We see the whole man.  We feel the entire story.  Our  spiritual adventures are uniquely and inextricably tied…WE ARE ONE VOICE…ACTIVISTS DEFENDING MICHAEL’S LIFE AND LEGACY.

“I don’t think of myself as a philosopher.  I think I have a purpose, as does everyone else on Earth.  To find that purpose and to live to express it is to ignite the spark of divinity within us.”

“No, I haven’t. (when asked if he had realized all his dreams)…Without dreams there is no creativity.  The creative urge in us comes from a discontent…a divine discontent that seeks to change, to transform, to fill the world with more magic.  My priority in life is to make a difference, to tread unfamiliar, uncharted territory and to leave some trails behind.”

“I know how to experience solitude.  Loneliness can be a harsh experience, but solitude is love and consciousness with all of life.”

DANGEROUS WORLD TOUR

In my imagination, I dream of a world where pain and suffering are no more…a world where life is made easier, bodies are free of disease, and hardship and struggle lessen to ultimately disappear.  And then, I ask myself, would the price obtained for such euphoria be a life esteemed too lightly.  “YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT TRAGEDY, THAT heal the world threePAIN TO PULL FROM.”  Michael Jackson  For one who lived every day of his entire life  under the microscope, he never avoided the heat.  Instead, embracing sweet disorder, he enthusiastically lived the struggle, never yielding to it. The purpose lived in the struggles to set a world free…not avoidance of pain and tragedy, but rather, purposeful expression igniting the spark of divinity within.  His divine discontent was to make change, to make a difference, and to bring us all real magic.

Michael’s divine discontent sought changes in perception…human understanding was something gained with innocence, not age…in agreement with Pablo Picasso when he said, “It takes a long time to become young”, Michael redefined adult education…greed, jealousy, cynicism, distrust weakened with the force of innocent love…faith in mankind’s potential transformed an otherwise desperate view of our neighbor and allowed a world of magic to emerge.  That magical world included children taking ownership to enlighten…leading adults by the hand to rediscover childhood genius…joining carefree itcfiveand perceptive thought.

“Hello.  Now, I’ve got an important and special  message for all my friends who watch ‘Going Live!’  Next spring, I plan to hold a conference for children at my home in California.  I wanna hear from you about the problems that the world faces, and, more importantly, how we are going to tackle them and solve them.  I wanna hear from the children of Great Britain.  As you probably know, the Heal the World Foundation is now set up in countries around the world, and it will focus its efforts towards healing the world’s  problems, including the environment, homelessness, racism, drug abuse and cruelty to children.  So join me in helping heal the world and make it a better place.  I look forward to meeting your chosen representative next spring.  Thank You.”  Michael Jackson BBC November 1992animals two

Treading unfamiliar and uncharted territories, Michael stretched the popular music canon.  His trails transformed entertainment, making it possible for the magic of entertainment to enchant, educate and rally for cause, all at the same time.  The genius of his compositions made new realms of possibility, while all the time, crying out for the collective strength of people to love and care for one another and the planet…always, ALWAYS starting with the children.

“I compose them.  I write them.  I do the scoring.  I do the lyrics.  I do the melodies.  But still, it’s a work of God.”

Michael Jackson

Michael has taught me the value in identifying purpose, and then, expressing it in a way that makes a positive difference.  The trails he left behind are traversed by people across this entire planet…each uniquely defining and keeping his messages alive.  Because, in doing that, we are learning, improving and holding onto the notion that we are not too late.  He never stopped believing…believing in children, believing in the power and potential of people, believing that we all can make magic, and, believing that it was all about LOVE.  He was unafraid…tackling the problems and uncomfortable botdf twoquestions of abuse and neglect, remaining in the heat his entire life.  But, while taking the heat, Michael’s light shines on reminding us of ours…keeping us in DIVINE DISCONTENT.
