A MAGIC IN THE MOMENT

“My music is not mine.  It’s a gift from God.  It is my obligation to share it with the world.”

Michael Jacksones three

Dipping into the world of magic, accepting the idea that if you believe in it, you will find it, hasn’t been easy for me.  To be sure, I often enjoy flights of fancy.  And, from time to time, I have been fascinated by the potent power of things unexplained.  “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer.  It sings because it has a song.”  Maya Angelou  Animals accept wonderment without question.  Whatever is unexplained remains unexplained.  They simply inhabit the joy.  Having lived with animals the better part of my life, I have seen first hand their sense of humor…life is a game to them.  They simply live in their innocence.  Each morning, Casey and I walk passed a tiny fairy village created by a child in our neighborhood.  Today I noticed the addition of a multi-leveled house added…the fairies’ community must be growing.handsome six

Michael has taught me that there is a divinity in magic, a place of possibility.  Our desires live in our prayer.  That intuition leads to discovery that holds textures and colors and endless opportunity.

“I’m telling you it would be neat for you to sometime just hook up your electric guitar or whatever, and just start playing…and get me a mic…out of the moment, you know, which would be really, really fun.  A LOT OF MAGIC IS CREATED OUT OF THE MOMENT LIKE THAT…IT REALLY IS.”handsome five

Michael Jackson

What I know now is my imagination is growing its wings because of Michael Jackson.  His artistry teaches me how to really see, really listen.  “Wherever you go, go with your heart.”  Confucius Each day on this journey, I feel an elevated understanding of everything.  Spending hundreds of hours studying Michael’s astounding catalog has really given me an education into the artistry of musical composition.  I have learned more by listening with headphones, in the dark, than all the educational hoops I jumped through in college, for I am learning from the master.  Elizabeth Michelle Billeaudeaux said in her book, AN ANGEL AMONG US We Called Him Michael badfourteenJackson…a spiritual journey, “I know that when I listen to his voice, especially certain songs, I actually seem to vibrate on a cellular level.  His pitch, his resonance, his melody, his timing…all seem to touch my inner core, who I think of as ‘me’.  This is how he seemed to bring us all together.  He knew about this:  tonal vibration and the rhythms of time and space.”   There is a sensuality in Michael’s arrangements, his orchestrations, his vocals that is unique.  It draws you in emotionally and reaches down deep inside.  I find it difficult to put language to it because there isn’t anything like it anywhere.

“In his final months, Jackson would tell his fellow collaborators that he was so ‘supercharged’ he couldn’t sleep at night;  his mind wouldn’t shut down.  ‘I’m channeling,’ he told Kenny Ortega.  ‘I’m writing music, and ideas are coming to BEAUTYFOURTEENme and I can’t turn them off.’  Ortega asked him if it would be possible that he might put these ideas on the shelf until after July 13 when his concert series began.  Jackson replied half-jokingly, ‘You don’t understand-if I’m not there to receive these ideas, God might give them to Prince.'”  MAN IN THE MUSIC  Joseph Vogel

There is an intense joy that comes out of Michael’s music, and, although messages include aspects of the human condition, address social justice issues and offer fuel for change…still, the listener feels emotional joy resting on every note, every beat.  For me, there is a depth of sensuality often taking my breath, sliding into my psyche.  Be assured, anything Michael committed hours of effort to revealed his passion for it.  Mediocrity and half-heartedness were not concepts known to him.beautythirteen

“I think we are going to find out in this next century that there is something really magical about laughter.  Whenever I feel depressed and down and out, I force myself to laugh and I try to think of something funny and I feel better.  I think some kind of chemical reaction takes place in the soul.  I really feel better and force myself to smile.  I think smiling, the muscles, it does something and I feel a lot better.”

Michael Jackson

This week, I have been gifted with eight of the most astounding pieces of music…Michael’s XSCAPE Demos.  From the moment I experienced each one, I was touched deep down in my soul…all soundscapes of fantasy.  Michael’s compositions are MASTERPIECES.  His vocals move from angelic to romantic, to sensual, to gritty and edgy taking the listener badthirteenfrom subtlety to crash and burn.  Michael has the ability to put layers of sound together, each playing a role without being overpowering.  “Michael Jackson is a show-stopper, not a scene stealer.”  That aptly describes his writing compositions.  With each listen, you discover another layer.  Of course, we all know, Michael’s background vocals have msgtwono peer.  With these demos, his voice explores new vistas of storytelling.  The messages are captivating.  Michael has  never shied away from important issues…DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE and SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM present powerful stories of women’s rights and abused children.  A PLACE WITH NO NAME gives a utopian world where there is no pain, only beauty.  It reminds me of the Neverland Michael created.  BLUE GANGSTA offers a third chapter to SMOOTH CRIMINAL AND ALCAPONE. It’s soundscape is brilliant.   And, XSCAPE…”You want me…come get me!” Xscape is magnificent!  AMEN! gardner street school A PLACE WITH NO NAME…”We’re honored that Michael Jackson chose to record it and we’re impressed with the quality of the track…Michael Jackson really did it justice…It’s really poignant.”  Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley  LOVE NEVER FELT SO GOOD and LOVING YOU…offer romance.  And, CHICAGO, touches me in places I really can’t talk about.  OHHHHH!

When people ask me what is my favorite Michael Jackson song, I always say that would be like asking what is the favorite breath I have taken.  These eight demos have given me breaths that feed my soul and touch my heart.  I have hours of magical moments ahead, dipping into the wonderment over and over again.  Thank you, Michael, for creating sound and message that I cannot get enough of…thank you for sharing your hours of blood, sweat and God-given talent with me once again.  I am grateful beyond words.  You have taught me to believe in magic.  You have shown me how to laugh and feel joy in the process.  With each note, each rhythm, your unconditional love gives  glorious music.  AND, I WANT TO DANCE!

ESCAPE

“On stage is the most magic place I can be.  I can’t put it into words.  IT’S ESCAPISM.  It’s like walking on air.  For me, it’s the safest place in the world to be.   I can’t be hurt on stage.  I can sleep on stage.  I hate to leave stage.  It’s wonderful.  I was raised on stage.  I LOVE IT.  When I say magic, I mean wonderment, excitement, ESCAPISM, another world.  And, there are people who gbowrdo that sort of thing, like Steven Spielberg or Walt Disney…and for the spectators, it’s exciting, its entertainment, it’s joy, it’s love.  It makes my eyes light up when I see E.T., when they fly in the sky, or, a great concert.  I like to create magic myself, I love magic.

Michael Jackson

“Seeing all the races together, which I love so much.  All the colors in the audience capt eo threeloving one another, getting on with each other and enjoying the music…a unified field.”

Michael Jackson

“Ever since I was a little boy, I had dreamed of creating the biggest-selling record of all time.  I wanted to do something special.  I’d stretch my arms out, as if I were sending my thoughts right up into space.  I’d say to myself, ‘THIS IS MY DREAM. THIS IS MY WISH,’ every time before I’d dive into the water.  I believe in wishes and in a person’s ability to make a wish come true.”

Michael Jackson

My retreat into magic comes when I enter Michael’s world.  In essence, he has become my LIFE COACH turning me into a believer…someone who embraces the notion, wherejam two you believe there is magic, you will find it.  His is a style of teaching in which enchantment is the reigning character.  When in his company, I abandon distrust and offer myself up entirely.  I shift my fixation from MUST do, to WANT to do…allowing myself to simply enjoy.  Escapism absorbs my mind in irresistible play.

Michael understood the power of play.  “It’s all meant to be play.  Keep to your course, childrenbut dance while you do it.”  MJ  “Wonderment and magic are things I’ve just never grown out of.”  Laughter is immeasurable and Michael’s giggles are legend.  He helped to quell the pressures of living, as the most famous person on the planet,  bonding with children and nature, animals and art, escaping his realities with playfulness.  His inner child intact, he teaches me how to nurture mine.  Michael’s life embraced his friend, Katharine Hepburn’s philosophy, ‘If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun!” Or, from William Butler Yeats, “Fairies come take me out of this dull world, for I would ride with with childrenyou upon the wind, run on top of the disheveled tide, and dance upon the mountains like a flame.”  When the world made things hard, Michael did what was hard…and, in my memory, I know of no one who was expected to face hardship more.  That is one of the reasons I marvel at Michael…seeing him so thoroughly enjoy the moment, embracing everything and everyone…the quintessential  role model.  These are the experiences that expand, slipping into my psyche and taking up residence there.  animals fourMAGIC RULES.  I escape.

In my articles, I feature Michael and those who love him.  This second group numbers in the millions, growing daily…there is so much inspiration and infectious charm to go around.  For me, I have made what I love a part of what I do.  The result is healthy indulgences into research, musical and live performances, books, articles, speeches, interviews all evoking joy.  In satisfying my creative spirit, I am at play, walking on air in my very own fairyland.  “The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers.  But, most of all, the world needs dreamers who do.”  Sarah Ban Breathnach  Michael showslma three me what a dreamer who does looks like.  All who are kindred spirits understand that we occupy a single soul.  My interpretation of fun wraps around everything Michael.  Michael lived this line from Hans Christian Anderson, “Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale.”  Michael told us that he would never stop being Peter Pan in his heart.  The garden that was Neverland was not there just for him…it was there to be shared in an awakening of the human spirit…a fantasy scape meant to heal those children whose lives were overtaken by terminal disease, by poverty and lack…healing that brought with it laughter robtwoand play and joy.  Michael’s loving words to and for children defined a diplomacy that needed all the words and actions it could get.  These large thoughts were wrapped in giggles and escapism and pure love.  It’s excitement, it’s entertainment, it’s joy, it’s love.

“I have so many memories of him pranking me onstage.  Our quick-change tents shared a side, and as we were rushing to change our wardrobe in between songs, invariably athrowing things grape or a carrot would come rocketing over the top of me.  I could always hear him giggling through the wall.  He rented out amusement parks a lot.  I remember riding a swinging-pirate-ship ride with him somewhere in Germany and because we were the only ones on the ride, he wouldn’t let the operator stop the ride, as I got sicker and sicker.  He thought is was hilarious.  When we were in Tokyo, I got a call from him at night inviting me to come to his hotel-where we watched Amos and Andy Shows.  He laughed and threw popcorn the whole time.  My most beloved memory, however, was watching him perform HUMAN NATURE every night from the side of the stage.  There was something so genuinely vulnerable in his voice in that song and watching the freedom with which he danced, doing the moves he invented, only made me more keenly award of the greatness I was blessed to be witnessing.”

My ESCAPE today came in the luscious form of Michael’s newly released demo “LOVE NEVER FELT SO GOOD”! (the solo demo version).  Suddenly, I was singing and dancing…that familiar feeling of ecstasy mesmerizingly soothing and energizing at the same time.  I thought of the line from Albert Camus, “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”  The genius in Michael’s freedom to create astounding music presented rhythms and melody and harmonies onlyadorableeight heard in Michael’s studio…until now.  And, again, I escaped into Michael’s magical world.  I haven’t stopped smiling.  It was play, it was fun, it was escapism…walking on air in my own fairyland.  THE DREAM CONTINUES.

IN THE LIGHT

When I’m with you I’m in the light where I cannot be found, gorgeousseven

It’s as though I’m standing in a place called hallowed ground.

Speechless.  Speechlessangelthree

That’s how you make me feel.

MICHAEL JACKSONhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6VCEY2ExL8

There is a spirit that lives in the hearts of those who refuse to see an absence of light in the world.  Refusing to accept stumbling, narrow-minded cynicism as a constant companion, whose criticism is bound-up in the dark, those seeking the light are set free…set free to discover second chances to live deliberately.  I am often reminded of Michael turning over the beetles that had fallen on their backs saying that everyone deserves a second chance.  Second chances offer opportunity for change, opportunity itcfourto rediscover personal gifts and put them to use deliberately, seeking to heal the world and make it a better place for those who can give, and, those who cannot.  Within this spirit lives the ability to forgive.  During his History World Tour, Michael created powerful drama while performing EARTH SONG.  After bringing the audience to a collective passion, a tank was brought onto the stage with an armed soldier emerging from it.  Michael chose to bring this intense scene to an end with the soldier putting down his weapon, falling to his knees, weeping.  A child walked to him, reaching out with a small hand and a flower.  FORGIVENESS and setting us free…a second chance.  Without the newness of that renewed light, all would be lost, we would die.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buCdGwH2Efc

Michael profoundly believed in people.  He profoundly believed that the message delivered by music has the power to heal.  He believed in the collective power for change.  He believed in unconditional love.  He believed in forgiveness.

“Michael Jackson sometimes compared the reciprocal energy of a performance mtv performanceto a Frisbee…’you hold it, you touch it, and you whip it back.’  Audiences, he believed, were more than passive spectators; they were a vibrant community, composed of all ages, races, religions, and cultures, standing shoulder to shoulder, temporarily bound up in the collective spell of his music, imagining the world anew.  ‘You can take them anywhere,’ he effused.  This was his gift as an artist; the ability to dissolve into the stories, the emotions, the MAGIC of his music-and to take masses of people from all walks of life with him.  He called this creative bond many things over the years; escapism, entertainment, showmanship, art.  But ultimately, for Jackson, it was about sharing and receiving love.”

Michael did not want to repeat himself.  His imaginative visions were unlimited.  At the conclusion of the BAD Era, Michael knew it was time to completely assume every aspect of his art.  “Michael was not angry with Quincy.  He has always had an admiration for him and an immense respect.  But with DANGEROUS, Michael wanted to control the creative process from A to z.  Simply put, he wanted to be his own boss.”  Brad Buxer, Joseph Vogel. badnine

HUNGRY FOR MICHAEL JACKSON.  We must admit, that is currently the hot topic.  Anticipating XSCAPE, the entire world is witnessing MICHAEL FEVER.  Cynicism in the media with critics already narrow-mindedly bound-up by their low-ceiling imaginations and myth agendas…debates among Fans…to be sure, the world knows an album is due out in May.  For me, I, happily, will listen to the album and decide for myself.  I remember the discussion of the release of BAD as I watched the BAD 25 Documentary.  Critics were poised then to tear it apart.  So, what else is new?  “Critics think they know the way…but, they do not know how to drive the car!”  I LOVE xscapefourTHAT.

So, what do we know for sure?  TELL US, MICHAEL!marcel marceau two

I love great music.  It has no color, it has no boundaries.

Music is tapestry.  It’s different layers, it’s weaving in and out, and if you look at it in layers, you understand it better.

I believe in perfection and I try to create that in everything I do.  We never seem to rehearsal twototally get there, but I believe in perfect execution.  And when we don’t get at least 99.9 percent, I get really upset.

I think it’s going to be totally different than what I did before.  The idea is to take it a step forward and to innovate or else why am I doing it?  I don’t want to be just another can in the assembly line.

I’m writing music, and ideas are coming to me and I can’t turn them off.

I think I haven’t scratched the surface yet of what my real purpose is for being here.  I’m committed to my art.  I believe that all art has as its ultimate goal the union between the material and the spiritual, the human and the divine.  And I believe that that is the very reason for the existence of art and what I do.  And I feel fortunate in being that instrument through which music flows.

I’m never satisfied with anything.  After I’ve cut a track, I’ll come home and say ‘oh no, tdrcau threethat’s not right,’ and you just go back and back and back.

“According to Rolling Stone, Michael had 62 songs written and wanted to release 33 of dance fourthem as a triple album.”  BAD Album 1987.  The hunger for Michael will not end.  We will enjoy his enormous catalog, his breath-taking performances, his wearable art…the powerful glow of his light will last forever.  XSCAPE will be dissected and debated, as all posthumous works of art are…but, I think many will agree, that Michael lives inside it.  AND, WE ARE HUNGRY FOR MICHAEL.

Thank you, Vibrant Community, for the individual glow of many colors which collectively burn as one.  I love you.

42-YEAR OLD LONDON DESIGNER

MAT MAITLAND

ART DIRECTOR FOR BIG ACTIVE DESIGN

The creator of the brand new artwork for the upcoming Michael Jackson album

XSCAPE

How did it come about that you worked on the XSCAPE album?

WORD MUST HAVE GOT OUT THAT I’M A HUGE MJ FAN!  BIG ACTIVE DESIGN COMPANY WERE APPROACHED BY SONY.

How many designs did you create for XSCAPE?xscape three

I CREATED ABOUT 10 COVER IDEAS.

How was the artwork made?  Was it based on a photo?

IT’S BASED ON A PHOTOGRAPH GIVEN TO ME BY THE MICHAEL JACKSON ESTATE.  IT’S A FAIRLY RECENT IMAGE OF MICHAEL BUT, LIKE I SAY, IT’S BASED ON THAT IMAGE AND USES PARTS OF IT.

Was there anything in the design process that you particularly wanted to achieve?

IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING MYSELF, THAT THE COVER FELT LIKE A NEW MICHAEL ALBUM…SOMETHING HE MIGHT HAVE DONE TODAY, RATHER THAN A RETROSPECTIVE IMAGE THAT MAY HAVE LOOKED LIKE A BEST OF.  I REALLY WANTED TO CAPTURE THE MAGIC AND POWER OF MICHAEL JACKSON, BUT ALSO HIS VULNERABILITY.exscape

Where did you draw inspiration for the XSCAPE artwork?

I WANTED TO EVOKE A CONTEMPORARY AND QUINTESSENTIAL INCARNATION OF MICHAEL AS AN ARTIST WHO CONSTANTLY INJECTED NEW BLOOD INTO HIS MUSIC AND ALSO TO FOCUS ON BOTH THE INTRIGUING AND FUTURISTIC ASPECTS OF MICHAEL JACKSON, AS WELL AS BEING A TRIBUTE.  I HOPE THAT IT WILL INSPIRE REFLECTION ON A MAN WHO CONTINUES TO STIMULATE AND OFFER UNIQUE, CREATIVE MUSICAL POSSIBLILITIES TO SO MANY TODAY.  I ALSO TRIED TO SAY THAT MICHAEL IS ALL AROUND US…IN OUR UNIVERSE AND BEYOND, ON EARTH AND IN OUTER SPACE.

What is your favorite album cover from Michael’s catalogue?

DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH A KNOWING IMAGE THAT ACKNOWLEDGED AND COMMENTED ON THE WORLD MICHAEL HAD CREATED FOR HIMSELF, GOOD AND BAD. IT KIND OF CARRIED ON THE THEME OF THE ‘LEAVE ME ALONE’ VIDEO AS THAT WAS THE LAST TRACK OF BAD AND THEN dangerous signTHIS WAS THE ALBUM AFTER THAT.  IT HAS SO MUCH DETAIL IN IT WHICH WAS UNUSUAL IN THE TIMES OF SIMPLE COVERS…ALTHOUGH, THE EYES HELD YOUR ATTENTION.  ALSO, I LIKE THAT IT WAS TRUE TO MICHAEL’S VISION, WHEREAS ON BAD AND INVINCIBLE, THE LABEL STOPPED HIM FROM USING THE IMAGES HE WANTED.  ACTUALLY, COMING BACK TO THE EYES, THIS WAS A BIG INFLUENCE ON THE COVER I CREATED FOR XSCAPE…THE MAGNETIC STARE, ALWAYS LOOKING AT US.

How does it feel that your artwork is about to be owned by millions of people around the world and will be a part of iconic pop history for years to come?

IT’S BEEN A LIFELONG DREAM  TO CREATE A SLEEVE FOR MICHAEL JACKSON AND I FEEL HONORED TO BE ASKED TO DO IT.  EVEN IF I WASN’T A FAN, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING.  BUT AS A HUGE FAN, IT MAKES IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL.  I HOPE THAT THE FANS LIKE THE COVER!  I’VE HEARD THE ALBUM silhouette threeAND IT’S REALLY AMAZING!
